The terms get used interchangeably, but they don't mean the same thing. A chatbot and an AI agent solve different problems, and if you pick the wrong one, you pay for something that doesn't bring the result you expected.
The difference is simple. One talks, the other works.
The chatbot: answers questions
A chatbot holds a conversation. You ask a question, it gives you an answer from what it knows. It's useful for frequent questions, information about hours or products, the first contact with a client.
But that's where it stops. A classic chatbot can't book an appointment, can't update an order, can't send data to another system. It talks, but it doesn't do.
The AI agent: takes the task to the end
An AI agent understands what you need and acts. It doesn't just tell you an appointment can be booked, it books it. It connects to your apps, moves data, triggers steps, follows a process from start to finish.
A chatbot answers a question. An AI agent solves a problem.
Which one you need
If you only want to answer repetitive questions faster, a well-made chatbot is enough. It's cheap and quick to set up.
If you want to take real work off your team's plate, you need an agent. That's where the true value is: entire processes that happen on their own, correctly, without needing anyone's time.
In short
Don't ask "do I want a chatbot or an agent". Ask "what do I want to happen". If the answer is "an answer", you need a chatbot. If the answer is "an action", you need an agent.
